To Winterize or Not To Winterize
To winterize or not winterize...is a GREAT question! Whether or not to close your hot tub for the winter and have it "winterized" is really up to you.
Doesn't it save energy to have it winterized? Some hot tub owners feel it is more cost effective to winterize their tub for the cold season, but in actuality, the savings on the electric usage is less than the cost of having a professional winterization done. You could actually end up spending more than you're saving!
What we recommend: We recommend that you leave your tub running during the winter unless you will be away for an extended period of time, and no one will be around to check your hot tub on a weekly basis. The nickels and dimes you will spend in electrical costs will be money well spent in comparison to what a repair bill for a frozen hot tub would be.
I still want to shut it down. Can you tell me how?
Due to our climate and the freezing conditions we get in the winter, we recommend having your tub professionally winterized if needed. You must remember that, depending on the model of hot tub, you may have up to 3 jet-pump systems within the tub, and each one must be drained of all water to prevent freeze damage.
What happens if I get freeze damage?
Freeze damage can be very expensive to repair and would not be covered by the manufacturer, even if your tub is still within the warranty period.
Step by Step Filter Cleaning Instruction.
Dirty filters are the number one reason for service calls. A dirty filter will restrict the amount of heat your hot tub can disperse and cause the heater to trip off. Cleaning your filter should be thought of like vacuuming your home – the more often you do it the easier it is and less time it will take you.
1. Remove the cartridges from the filter housing by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Use a garden hose with a straight flow nozzle to wash down the filter element. Work from the top down, holding the nozzle at a 45 degree angle, and wash all the pleats with emphasis between pleats.
3. Rinse until all dirt and debris is gone.
If the filter has a coating of algae, calcium carbonate (residue from scale build up), iron, or other minerals, soak the cartridge in a filter cleaning solution.
4. Rinse the cartridge clean and reassemble housing.

Natural Water Care, a Non-Chlorine Alternative:
Less Chemical and Softer Water — Silver has been used to prevent bacteria accumulation in water for hundreds of years. Colloidal silver is now being used to treat bacteria medically. Why wouldn’t we use it in our hot tubs?
Three products used in conjunction with spa shock now provide a wonderful water care system for those seeking a more natural alternative to chlorine and bromine water sanitizers.
Silk Balance is a revolutionary step forward in simplifying how you deal with water in your spa. The patented, advanced formula balances and purifies your spa water in one step – simply shake and pour. This revolutionary change means water chemistry is done with one simple application. Silk Balance will help you avoid the time involved in adjusting, mixing, guessing, and using the hazardous chemical method. All you simply have to do is just shake and pour. Most spas require only 4 oz of Silk Balance weekly for instant balance and cleanliness. “Shake and Pour" the required measure into the filter compartment and let it circulate naturally.
Silver Ion Purifier is the FreshWater Ag+ continuous silver ion purifier further reduces the need for chlorine by introducing silver ions into the spa water that inhibit bacterial growth. Insert the cartridge into the filter of your Hot Spring Spa, and the silver ions are released automatically - there's no chance of under- or overdosing. It's virtually maintenance-free - simply replace the cartridge every 4 months. The silver ion is compatible with all water care systems and is highly recommended by Crystal River Spas’ senior service technicians.
Ozone Gas Sanitizer — A low level of constant sanitation For over 100 years ozone has acted as a sanitizer and germ killer; during that time it has grown in popularity to help sanitize hot tubs. It reduces the amount of chemicals used and allows customers to save time and money maintaining their hot tub water. Ozone was discovered by German scientist Christian Friedrich Schönbein in the 1840s when he identified a unique odor during electrolysis and electrical sparking experiments. He recognized the scent as the same odor found after a lightning flash and named the substance ozone.
Ozone Benefits
It’s a natural purifier and no harmful chemical by-products are created during purification, making it environmentally friendly. Eliminates chloramines, chlorine by-products that can cause skin irritations and illness, and their off-gas odor. Oxidizes hydrogen sulfides, iron, manganese, arsenic and most chlorinated hydrocarbons found in water.
